In the prologue of
Monteverdi's opera “Orfeo”, the character Music
promises to give the audience sweet melodies-some with noble anger,
some with love-which can “make peaceful a restless heart or
inflame a
cold mind”. Texas Early Music Project presents Monteverdi at
his most
intimate, with exquisite laments, passionate letters set to music,
dramatic madrigals of love and mythology and short excerpts from three
of Monteverdi's operas which superbly illustrate the contrasts of
emotions which characterize love and life.
A small supporting
chorus joins the featured vocal artists, Jenifer
Thyssen and Stephanie Prewitt with additional solos by David Stevens,
Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, Daniel Johnson, and Gil Zilkha. Concertmistress
Laurie Young Stevens leads the instrumental ensemble of violins, cello,
theorbo, ands harps.
