Lara McElroy

Soprano

I have had a love for music my entire life that started with piano lessons at age 5. I practiced daily for years until I started singing in high school and found that my passion for singing had been ignited! I sang some cabaret music, took a few lessons from an opera singer, sang in a chorus and I was hooked. I attended Indiana University and received my B.M. in Vocal Performance as well as minors in piano, French and Italian. At that point I took a break from the opera world to be near family and moved to Austin.

I made occasional forays into acting, comedy, improv but always found my way back to singing so I went back to school. A Master’s degree later from UT I found my interests had turned to early music, primarily Baroque opera and late Renaissance works. In 2000 I co-founded an early music group called Diablerie that focused on producing and performing Baroque music with the many talented women musicians in Austin. We produced a Vivaldi opera and had many plans for future works but we all started having babies, which necessarily became our focus for the past few years! In addition to being a professional singer I am a professional mom at this point with a 6-year old, a 3-year old and a one year-old baby.
